Start With a One Pager Business Plan

Is that even possible?

Yup, for sure!

Doing the One Pager forces you to think about your initial business idea and if the business model is viable before you invest heavily in it. What exactly are you trying to achieve? What are your short-term and long-term goals? How will you make money?

By putting these thoughts on paper, you create a vision that will guide your decisions.

if you are still at the idea stage and not sure where to start, follow these simple Business Idea Validation steps and access the FREE Business Idea Validation Template.

At a high level, begin by answering few questions:

1. What problem are you solving?

2. For whom? who is your target market?

3. What are your expected expenses and revenues?

4. What model will you use?

Time Commitment: 30 minutes

Then, Invest a Little More Time

Research your market.

One of the biggest and most expensive mistakes entrepreneurs can make is doing little or no homework. What does market research entail, why is it key for entrepreneurs, and how to get it done with limited resources? For more details, you can deep dive on Market Research and Insights.

Then, answer few more questions: Who are your competitors? Who is your target audience? What are your niche market trends? This understanding helps you position your business strategically and identify opportunities for growth.

Outline the customer "Pain Point" your offering is alleviating. Entrepreneurs cannot go too broad initially. Finding a small, underserved market and dominating it, is a great strategy. Don’t be afraid to focus on a niche.

  • Identify the customer segment wanting to solve the “pain” really badly. For example, instead of aiming to solve a problem for "students," narrow it down to "students with jobs, without financial support, who are looking for quick and efficient learning options." The more specific you can get, the more effective your solution will be.

  • Define the strategies to differentiate your offering from the competition. While hundreds if not thousands of entrepreneurs may have a similar idea to you, execution via your specific competitive advantage is key. Understanding where competitors have failed and / or what are their short comings vis a vis your product, will allow you to further narrow your niche.

Now, it's time to define your business model.

What model do you choose to build and why? Is it sustainable in the long run? How will you make money? What is your revenue model?

Simple Plan. Let's Talk Numbers

You have now outlined your goals, your target market, your business model. Can you articulate your capital and funding needs over the next 6 months, 12 months?

Almost there! You now need to move your attention to basic finances. What will your cash burn-out be in the first 6 months, in the first year?

If you are just starting your venture, this is the time to focus on realistic estimates for the year to come.

Ask the hypothetical question: Would my product make you happy and solve a need you may have? Collect feedback. Tweak and improve.

Now, are you ready to move to a tougher audience? Select few "potential clients" and run the offering by them, or even better create a survey and collect feedback. How about other stakeholders? The business plan will guide your decisions but also communicate your vision to potential customers, partners, investors, and employees.

These stakeholders would also want to see a plan for how you will generate revenue.
